Exploding Deep Sea Column
by Steven Mayhew, CBA

  COLUMN

STEP 1
Place your 6ft conduit pipe onto your riser on your Conwin Baseplate.

STEP 2
Each quad on the column has 1 duplet of 2 pearl sapphire blue balloons and 1 duplet of 2 green Superagate balloons. Set your Precision Air to 3.5 seconds when inflating your 11” balloons. There are 10 quads on the 6ft conduit pipe.

  EXPLODING TOPPER

STEP 1
Using The Insider Tool inflate 30 5” Pearl Azure balloons, 30 5” Diamond Clear balloons and 30 5” Pearl White balloons into the 3 ft Blue Superagate balloon.

STEP 2
Once you remove the 3ft balloon from the holding tool inflate it with whatever gas you inflated your 5” balloons with.

THE GAS THEORY
This is quite easy really; if you are using helium to float the outer balloon then you must use helium inside all the balloons within the balloon regardless of what shape or size these are. If put air inside the inner balloons and then fill the outer balloon with helium, the helium will absorb into the inner balloons and eventually they will start to pop! So, the rule really is always stick to the same gases…air with air and helium with helium.
–Sue Marston Weston -

STEP 3
Make a loose knot in a 260Q and place the neck of the 3ft balloon in and tighten it. Place the 3ft Superagate on top of the column and wrap the 260Q around through the top 2 quads to lock it in place.

STEP 4
Measure the length of the Airline you will need to run it from a 1/3 way up the 3ft Superagate balloon, down through the column out the bottom and to the “Detonation Area”. Cut the Airline and attach your Exploder to the end that is nearest the 3ft balloon.

Note: I always suggest to run a 6” test piece of Airline from the Detonator Box to the Exploder you are using. Hook-up the Exploder Regulator to the Cylinder and press the detonation button a few times to lubricate the twin pins in the Exploder. When you observe that both pins are fully extending and retracting. Remove the Exploder and place it into the design.

STEP 5
Note: Wait for this step till you are finished with the entire design.
Attach the Exploder a 1/3 of the way  up the balloon with 2 pieces of packing tape that fit over the two panels one either side of the exploder.

  YELLOW ANEMONE

ISTEP 1
Inflate a yellow 260Q fully and then make a twist in the middle and release your finger from the knot to let out the air. Tie off the 260Q at the half way point. Repeat this step until you have 20 inflated balloons.

STEP 2
Tie all the balloons together at their knots. Wrap the middle of an un-inflated 260Q through knots of the inflated 260Q’s. Wrap the ends of the un-inflated 260 through the top two quads of  the column so the yellow anemone coming out the side of the column between the top quad and the 3ft balloon.

OCTOPUS

ISTEP 1
Inflate a purple 260Q fully and then make a twist in the middle and release your finger from the knot to let out the air. Tie off the 260Q at the half way point. Repeat this step until you have 8 inflated balloons.

STEP 2
Tie all the balloons together at their knots and cut of their excess. Inflate two  5” white balloons and tie them together. Next inflate a Purple Spray 16” balloon and tie it around the necks of the 5” white balloons and then twist the necks of the purple 260Q’s around the necks of the white 5” balloons. Arrange the 260q’s to face downward and draw your eyes on the 5” White balloons.

  ORANGE ANEMONES

Inflate an orange 260Q leaving 5 inches un-inflated at the end.
Make a 9 inch Lock Twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 7 inch loop.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 7 inch loop.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 7 inch loop.
Cut the un-inflated end of the 260 and tie it off into the pinch twist.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 6 inch loop.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 6 inch loop.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 6 inch loop.
Inflate a second 260Q and tie it into the last pinch twist you made.
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 5 inch loop
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 5 inch loop
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 5 inch loop
Make a 1 inch twist followed by a 1 inch pinch twist and then a 4 inch loop.
Cut the un-inflated end off the 260 and tie it off into the pinch twist.
Using Glue Dots, Glue Dot each of the loops to each other.

Puff a little air into an un-inflated red 260Q with your mouth and tie it off. Repeat this step until you have 5 red puff-inflated 260Q’s. Place them side by side with all the knots at one end. In the middle twist them all together and cut them off approx 1 inch below the twist on the side with the knots. Tie all four together and slide the knot into the smallest loop on your anemone.

Glue Dot your anemone to your 11” balloons on your column  and tie a piece of monofilament line to one of the pinch twists and wrap the other end into the necks of the nearest quad on the column.

  BUBBLES

Inflate 11” Diamond Clear to various size on the Precision Air and knot it
(Note: You want to keep the balloons to a round shape, not fully inflated to a tear drop shape.) Cut of the neck of the balloon and glue dot a few together and then to the arch.

  JELLYFISH

STEP 1
Puff a little air into an un-inflated pink 260Q with your mouth and tie it off. Repeat this step until you have10 pink puff-inflated 260Q’s. Place them side by side with all the knots at one end. Take a 3ft piece of monofilament line and tie a TIGHT permanent knot around the 10 balloons right below their necks. Cut off the necks.

STEP 2
Inflate the 16” Pink balloon and DO NOT TIE IT. Place it on its side on a clean table surface and press the bottom of the Lomey dish into the pink balloon as you let the air escape. Note: Press the Lomey Dish into the balloon hard enough to make the latex wrap around the edge of the dish. Tape the edges of the latex to the inside of the dish with duct tape.

STEP 3
Set your Precision Air to 0.2 seconds and Inflate a quad of 5” white balloons. Slide the monofilament line with the pink balloons around two of the white 5” balloons until the pink 260Q’s are sticking out from the bottom. Tie the monofilament line around the center of the quad and cut off one side. Duct Tape the top to the 5” white balloons to the inside of the Lomey Dish.

STEP 4
Attach the jelly fish by wrapping the monofilament line around one of the 11” balloons in the column (leaving enough line for the Jellyfish to hang over the 11” balloon).
